Throughout 2019, the artist collective known as Mondongo conceived and created a work, The Baptistery of Colors, inspired by Johannes Itten’s treatise The Art of Color. The director of this film was commissioned to document the development of that work. The commission, however, did not come to fruition. Instead of fulfilling the assignment, the director imagined his own work dedicated to Itten’s book. This work —entirely unrelated to that of Mondongo— would stand in opposition to the other as part of a hypothetical challenge “in the manner of old adventure novels in the style of Jules Verne,” in the words of the author himself. For reasons too cumbersome to explain, the self-proclaimed “challenge” never took place. This film presents the unfinished, perhaps scattered remnants of that unilateral and failed experiment.
